What is a Pendulum Test?
What is a Pendulum Test?
The Pendulum Test is a standard method of measuring slip resistance, and is the preferred method of testing by the Health and Safety Authority of Ireland. This test measures the dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF), and is designed to replicate a pedestrian heel strike, the point at which most slips occur.
Two types of Sliders are used, both 4S (shod) and TRL (barefoot) in the assessment of floor slip resistance for straight walking on a horizontal surface.
How to interpret PTV results?
How to interpret PTV results?
A PTV of 20 indicates a 1 in 2 probability of a slip
A PTV of 24 indicates a 1 in 20 probability of a slip
A PTV of 27 indicates a 1 in 200 probability of a slip
A PTV of 36 indicates a 1 in 1 million probability of a slip
A PTV result of 36 PLUS should be achieved in end use results.
Testing Standard
Testing Standard
The new European Standard EN 16165:2021 Determination of Slip resistance of Pedestrian Surfaces: Methods of Evaluation has been adopted by 34 CEN members and as such is given the status of the national standard.
At Total Slip Solutions we conduct all our testing of samples and flooring to the latest UKSRG Guidelines as best practice. To comply to IS EN 16165:202, the HSA states that for specification or legal action a robust test such as the Pendulum should be used.
PLEASE NOTE: There is NO transferability of results from the different test methods to each other.
The following standards have been withdrawn: DIN 51097, DIN 51130 & BS 7976.1.2.3.
